Epilepsy in children

Some children and young people with rare forms of epilepsy can have 1,000 or more seizures in just one month.  In one clinical trial, a child reported 1,717 seizures in the month preceding the study.
Severe childhood epilepsies are characterized by frequent seizures, neurodevelopmental delays and impaired quality of life.
Approximately 100,000 children in North America suffer from treatment-resistant epilepsy, causing uncontrollable seizures.
Approximately one third continue do not not respond to traditional drug therapy or may be unable to tolerate side effects.
The incidence of treat-resistant epilepsy remains high despite the influx of many new antiepileptic drugs over the past 10 to 15 years.
