Each chemical compound is distinct, with specific effects on mental health and brain function
THC produces opposite effects in the brain compared with CBD, according to Australian researchers who reviewed 31 scientific papers on the topic.
These changes are especially pronounced in brain regions that are rich in cannabinoid receptors, according to the study published in Biological Psychiatry.
THC can increase anxiety
THC has proven therapeutic benefits, but it can also increase anxiety symptoms, hasten the onset of psychosis and cause psychotic-like experiences, particularly in those who may be pre-disposed, the study said.
CBD may protect the brain
On the other hand, it said, CBD may actually improve psychosis, and protect the brain from harmful effects.
THC can create feelings of euphoria, so cannabis plants have largely been bred to contain high levels of THC.
