THC reduces inflammation in the stomach and the severity of colitis by killing an enzyme in white blood cells, according to an article In The Expert Review of Gastroenterology & Hepatology (April 2017)
“A huge amount of preclinical data suggests that gastrointestinal disease is highly amenable to treatment with Cannabis/cannabinoids,” it says.
The article points out that Cannabis is frequently used to alleviate diarrhea, abdominal pain and loss of appetite. Approximately 84% of cannabis users reported that it improves abdominal pain.
A third Cannabinoid Receptor was recently identified in the stomach and colon.
Clinical trails are currently underway.
